The Yantian District environmental authorities yesterday addressed public concerns regarding elevated fecal coliform levels at Shenzhen’s Dameisha Beach. According to the authority, recent water quality fluctuations are primarily the result of increased visitor numbers and prolonged heavy rainfall, which have caused pollutants and debris to be washed into the sea.
The Yantian branch of the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment reported that it has been closely monitoring the beach’s water quality, conducting twice-weekly tests since June. Results have been made available to the public. Between 2021 and 2023, a total of 69 tests were carried out, with the beach maintaining an average water quality rating of 87.5%.
According to the authorities, the fluctuations this year are largely due to two factors. First, Dameisha Beach has seen a surge in visitors since the opening of the Dameisha Metro line, which provides direct access to the beach. Peak daily visitors this summer reached 190,000, a 110% rise compared to last year. Second, this year has seen unusually high rainfall, with the district recording 1,719.3 millimeters so far this year—a 63% increase from 2023. This has led to pollutants and debris from nearby mountains being washed into the sea, impacting water quality.
In response, Dameisha Beach Park has expanded the swimming area, added temporary changing rooms and restrooms, and increased cleaning and security personnel to maintain a safe and clean environment. The environmental authorities will continue to strengthen water quality monitoring and provide regular public updates. Local agencies, including the Meisha Subdistrict, are also coordinating efforts to improve beach management, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for visitors.
