To better serve tourists and businesspeople from around the globe, Shenzhen has introduced a new initiative to disseminate local weather warnings in multiple languages.
On Sept. 4 at 7 p.m., the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory issued a blue typhoon warning. Soon, the city’s large outdoor LED screens started to display the alert in both Chinese and English, signifying the start of regular multilingual warning broadcasts in Shenzhen.
This initiative followed a collaboration between the meteorological observatory and the local emergency management authority to enhance the early warning system. The upgrade ensures compatibility for issuing multilingual alerts during major weather events like typhoons and rainstorms.
Furthermore, to prepare for potential emergencies during international events or significant activities in Shenzhen, early warnings will be bilingually disseminated in Chinese and English within key affected areas. For other international occasions, the addition of a third language to the warnings is also an option, based on specific requirements.
The multilingual warning system offers vital support to expats in Shenzhen, ensuring they receive timely and effective alert notifications, according to the observatory.
In recent years, the local weather service has expanded its methods for delivering early warning messages. Earlier this month, during the approach of Typhoon Yagi, the observatory swiftly issued alerts using over 20,000 outdoor electronic screens, along with its mobile app, official website, television broadcasts, and other channels.
