Inbound tourism bookings surge during 3-day holiday

From: Shenzhen Daily | Updated:2024-06-15

Shenzhen became a popular travel destination for both domestic and overseas tourists during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, according to a report by Ctrip, China’s largest online travel services provider.

The report indicated that inbound travel bookings increased by 180% during the just-concluded three-day holiday, placing the city among the top 10 Chinese destinations for overseas travelers. Popular attractions in Shenzhen included the Window of the World, Shenzhen Safari Park, the Bay Glory Ferris wheel, OH BAY, and Rose Coast.

Additionally, Shenzhen ranked 7th on a list of the top 10 most popular cities for domestic tourists during the holiday. The other top cities were Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, Chongqing, Xi’an, and Wuhan.

The report also noted that many travelers opted for short-distance trips within their cities or staycations due to the relatively short holiday, which started Saturday. Nearly 70% of travel orders from domestic customers during the holiday were for nearby and local trips, with bookings for nearby trips showing a year-on-year increase of nearly 20%.

The top 10 popular destinations for nearby trips were Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Beijing, Tianjin, Jinan, Chengdu, and Shenzhen.

As a result, high-speed railway routes connecting cities within a two-hour ride, such as those linking Shenzhen and Guangzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou, and Beijing and Tianjin, were preferred by domestic travelers.

People in China made 110 million trips during the holiday, up 6.3% year on year, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Domestic tourists spent 40.35 billion yuan (US$5.67 billion), an increase of 8.1% over the same holiday last year, according to the ministry.
