The city saw a significant boost in tourism during this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, holiday, with 3.32 million tourists flocking to the city and generating a total of 1.812 billion yuan (US$256 million) in tourism revenue, according to official statistics. This represented a 6.5% increase in tourist numbers compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, the city’s 23 major scenic attractions drew 746,500 visitors, contributing 40.06 million yuan in revenue.
Data from leading travel platforms highlighted Shenzhen’s rising popularity as a holiday destination. Travel site ly.com ranked the city fourth nationally in travel demand during the holiday, while Fliggy reported that Shenzhen made it into the top 10 most popular domestic destinations, largely due to its wide range of nearby travel options.
Meanwhile, data from Ctrip indicated that Shenzhen ranked seventh among holiday hotspots. Shenzhen also remained a key source of outbound travel, ranking sixth in outbound travel volume, thanks to its large population and economic vitality, according to Tuniu.
The quality of Shenzhen’s tourism services was well received, with visitor satisfaction levels surpassing those recorded during the summer holiday season. A survey revealed tourists rated their overall experience in Shenzhen during the holiday at 8.43 out of 10, a slight improvement over the summer score of 8.38.
Among the visitors were nearly 700 international tourists, who arrived in Shenzhen aboard the luxury cruise ship China Merchants Eden on Tuesday. They were on the “Exploring China” route, a bespoke cruise experience designed for European and American travelers along China’s coastal regions.
Shenzhen greeted these international visitors with an action-packed itinerary. Activities included a sea tour around the bay, a firsthand look at the city’s technological advancements during a visit to DJI, and cultural explorations at the Shenzhen Museum, Dapeng Fortress, and Lianhua Hill Park. Guests also immersed themselves in Chinese culinary culture, savoring mushroom hot pot and the diverse flavors of Guangdong dim sum.
