Yantian District unveiled 50 measures yesterday, in its latest effort to build itself into a core area of Shenzhen as a global marine center city.
The district, which has been positioned by Shenzhen to be an international shipping hub and offshore trade center, aims to become a key junction along the Belt and Road, and a strategic stronghold in “dual circulation” — domestic and international circulations that reinforce each other, according to an implementation plan for 2022-2025 released by the district government yesterday.
The plan highlights the development of a high-end marine industrial cluster, a pioneer zone of marine technological innovation, a Greater Bay Area marine economic cooperation zone and a demonstration zone for marine ecosystem protection.
By 2025, the district will boast a marine industrial cluster with an annual output value of 100 billion yuan (US$15.8 billion), with the marine industry contributing 20 percent to its total GDP.
Yantian, as one of China’s busiest container ports, is expected to handle 16 million TEUs in 2025, with 14.16 million TEUs handled in 2021.
The upgrading project at the east operation area of Yantian port will be stepped up, phase one of which includes three 200,000-ton container berths that have a designed annual handling capacity of 3 million TEUs.
The district will also set up an international vessel fueling center with an estimated annual revenue of over 10 million yuan.
Yantian will improve its coastal cultural tourism facilities, including tourist sites rich in marine culture, and marine-themed tourism services. It plans to become a preferred and influential coastal tourism and marine cultural exchange destination by 2025.
It also aims to become a coastal demonstration district for green and low-carbon development by 2025.
The district’s GDP was 65.8 billion yuan in 2020, witnessing the biggest growth rate among all its counterparts in the city for the first time in 17 years.
In 2019, the Central Government unveiled a detailed guideline on supporting Shenzhen in building a pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics, which stated that the city is supported in building itself into a global marine center city.
