The Metro network handled a total of 1.46 billion passenger trips in the first half of the year, or 8.03 million a day, an increase of 17% compared with the same period last year, according to data released by Shenzhen Metro Group.
The Metro network accounted for 73.5% of the city’s public transportation. Its daily ridership intensity reached 14,2000 passengers per kilometer, ranking first in the country. On March 8, ridership reached a single day record of 10.26 million, data show.
Faced with increasing passenger flows, especially during holidays like the Spring Festival, the Qingming Festival, May Day, and the Dragon Boat Festival, Shenzhen’s Metro network has been able to meet the challenge with efficient services.
Shenzhen Metro Group has put more trains into service, and 701 trains are expected to be in service before the end of the year.
By reducing departure intervals, the group has increased the number of train trips dispatched per day to its full capacity of 6,600. During peak hours, a total of 515 trains are operational. The departure intervals of three Metro lines are scheduled to be within two minutes.
The city’s Metro network currently spans 567.1 kilometers.
