New species of marine mushrooms identified

From: Shenzhen Daily | Updated:2024-04-02

Two new species of mushrooms, Candolleomyces brunneovagabundus and Candolleomyces albovagabundus, have been discovered at the Xiwan Mangrove Park in Shenzhen, according to a study published in the Journal of Fungi, sznews.com reported.

The new mushrooms were discovered by Yang Kunlong and Lin Jiaying, two undergraduates currently studying at the South China Agricultural University in Guangdong Province, when they visited the Xiwan Mangrove Park in July 2023.

For an in-depth study, the two students cooperated with two researchers from the Yunnan Key Laboratory for Fungal Diversity and Green Development, Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, who are the co-authors of their published paper “Mushrooms Adapted to Seawater: Two New Species of Candolleomyces (Basidiomycota, Agaricales) from China.”

The findings show that the two mushrooms are able to fruit and produce basidiospores when submerged in seawater, which indicates that they have probably adapted to the marine environment.

The new study has shed new light on our understanding of marine fungal diversity.

The discovery has also challenged a prediction in previous studies that marine basidiomycetes only produce extremely small basidiocarps, which suggests that there may be more large fungi in the marine environment that are not yet recognized.
